Your Book of Shadows or Journal

Essentially this is your witch’s books of secrets. A Book of Shadows is a book containing text and instructions for magical rituals! It can be an experimental practice, everyday ritual works, or a record of magic.

It is said that Wicca first introduced the concept of a book of shadows. Initially, when Wicca was still dominated by covens, “only one copy [of the Book] existed for an entire coven, kept by the high priestess or high priest. That rule has proved unfeasible, and it is [now] commonplace for all Witches to have their own copies.”

Now everyone can keep a book of shadows in any type of format or concept that they desire. I totally recommend not being too pedantic and make it a messy book where you can update a page without fear of making it look untidy. It’s not meant to be a show and tell style of Journal.

There is an Internet book of shadows free for everyone to use, and it’s called sacred texts.  Sacred texts covers nearly every tradition around the world and I’m sure you will enjoy getting lost on this website for hours and hours on end. You’re probably pick up a few extra traditions and passions by the end of your journey. I bet it will be a bookmark for many years to come.

Traditionally you would have another trusted soul to burn the book upon your death!

Savannah from Black Witch Coven loves collecting various styles of journals. She says, “Some journals are meant to be for home use only, and some are meant to travel. One always has to be mindful when taking any type of book a shadow on a journey into a foreign land, as witchcraft is not always excepted around the world. In some countries, it could mean death to be holding such information on ones person.”

In the video below, Savannah shows a variety of styles of journals, some small and some unbelievably large. The key is to buy the best quality you can afford, as these are meant to last you a lifetime.

Both decorative and sometimes functioning as quick reference guides, parchment posters are a great way to decorate the home, sacred space, or any place where you’ll be crafting herbal mixtures, spell mixes, and other such blends.

The Witches’ Alphabet:
The Witches’ Alphabet: Theban Script Quote from poster “Also called “the runes of Honorius” These letters are used to write spells and incantations in a Witches’ book of Shadows. and to inscribe one’s Craft name on ritual tools and Witch jewels. .

If you’re just starting out, you may wish to grab yourself a bunch of these inserts. If you’re like most people do you want to make sure your journal looks super pretty. You can spend hours and hours copping information from the website or from a book into your journal. There is a faster way to achieve the content and that is by purchasing inserts such as these below.

Personally I glue these posters into my book of shadows, however, you may wish to double-sided tape them, or maybe you have a more creative way!?

Book Holders:book holder

The range is currently around 10 to 15 inches, but these are fabulous for keeping your book off your altar while you could be working something quite messy. We have all had wax dripped onto our books and tools, and having a book holder can help avoid these messy issues.

A Book Holder is intended to help keep you from needing to crane your neck to read while you work.

My final tip is to give your book of shadows a good old smudging when you first bring it into your space. The purpose of this is to remove any of the energies others may have placed on it during its making and transportation. You are really giving it an introduction into your space with a good old smudge!

And while I could list all of our journals here I’m just going to send you to the search so you can find a book that inspires you!
