Svadhishthana-The Sacral Chakra

Svadhishthana also known as the Sacral Chakra, is the second traditional chakra according to Hindu Tantrism. The Sanskrit term “Svadhisthana” means “where your being is established.” This chakra is the seat of emotions and is blocked majorly by fear and guilt.

Description:

Location:

At the root of the sexual organs or groins. Its corresponding position in front of the body is barely below the belly button.

Sacral Chakra

Color: Orange

Element: Water

Shape: Circle with crescent

Planets: Mercury, Jupiter, Moon

Physical association: Womb, genitals, kidney, and bladder.

Incense: Gardenia, damiana

Tarot Suit: Cups

Representation:

The sacral chakra is illustrated as a white lotus. It has six vermilion colored petals that are inscribed with Sanskrit letters; ba, bha, ma, ya, ra, and la. Inside the lotus lies a white crescent moon.

The six petals represent the following modes of consciousness, also known as vrittis: affection, pitilessness, feelings of all-destructiveness, delusion, disdain, and suspicion.

Functions:

The sacral chakra controls pleasure, procreation, relationship, sensuality, and sense of self. It is said that it is difficult to raise the energy of consciousness above Svadhishthana. It is also connected with reproduction.

Blocking of the Sacral Chakra

Like I mentioned earlier, this chakra is blocked mainly by fear and guilt. When blocked, the individual will experience both emotional and physical symptoms.

Emotional symptoms

  • Addictive/compulsive behaviors,
  • Fear of change,
  • Emotional instability.

Physical symptoms:

  • Sexual dysfunction,
  • Reproductive issues (infertility, impotence, or menstrual issues)
  • Stomach or kidney disorders,
  • Lower back pain.

How to Balance the Sacral Chakra

Vibrating the mantra sound:

The mantra sound for the sacral chakra is “VAM”. When chanted, the vibrations will open and align this chakra.

Performing yoga exercises:

There are specific yoga poses that can be done to control and balance this center of pleasure and passion.

Examples are:

  • vajroli mudra (contraction of the genitals),
  • ashvini mudra (contraction of the anus),
  • Seated pelvic circles:

Sit in a cross-legged position with your hands on your knees and make circles with your torso. Move around in one direction 5 or 6 times, then switch directions.

  • Bhujangasana (cobra pose):

Lie on your stomach and let your feet be flat on the floor.

Keep your hands under your shoulders and slowly lift your head, chest, and abdomen.

Ensure that your naval remains on the floor. Then press down through the pubic bone toward the mat.

Recite positive affirmations:

If you are always scared, you can write and recite some affirmations that would reprogram your brain and kick fear away.

For example, you can say:

“I am lovely and deserve to be loved.”

“I attract relationships and enjoy sex.”

“I am happy and satisfied.”

“I embrace change.”

“I am creative.”

“I love and enjoy my body.”

“My sexuality is sacred.”

Balancing with gemstones

Amber, orange calcite, carnelian, hematite, etc.. are examples of gemstones that can be worn as jewelry or carried to balance the sacral chakra.

Orange calcite:

This stone can be used to remove emotional barriers, enhance creativity, and reunite your body and mind.

Moonstone:

If you are often worried about everything, use this stone to reduce worry and fill your aura with loving energy.

Carnelian:

This stone can be used to enhance creativity and artistry.

Citrine:

Also known as “stone of the mind”. It can be used to increase self-esteem and confidence.

Sacral Chakra Healing Meditation:

  • Sit in a quiet and comfortable place.
  • Ensure that your spine is straight and your limbs are relaxed.
  • Take ten slow, deep breaths.
  • Visualize a spinning orange circle glowing in the location of your sacral chakra.
  • Since this chakra is associated with water, visualize the orange light spreading out in ripple waves.
  • Watch as it slowly envelops your whole body. You will feel a warm sensation.
  • Continue in this meditation for at least five minutes. When you are done, open your eyes and end the meditation.

Practice left nostril breathing

This is called Ida Nadi breathing, and it is used to open up the second chakra. This form of breathing brings forth lunar energy.

Sit in a comfortable position, then simply close your right nostril with the first two fingers of your right hand.

Breathe in and out through the left nostril, only for 8 to 10 breaths. Do it while meditating on your intention.

Conclusion

The sacral chakra teaches us to be consciously aware of ourselves and karma. In life, the limitations that exist are the ones we place on ourselves. Fear and guilt are two enemies that we must overcome before we can get the best. If you want to nurture your sacral chakra every day, take a walk in the evenings and breathe deeply while admiring the beauty of nature.

Thank you for reading to this point but before you go, I want to ask you a question. What is the state of your sacral chakra? Do you think it is open, blocked or imbalanced? Whatever might be your case, we are always here to guide you on the appropriate healing methods to try. Just leave a comment, if possible.
